Here is another website we have helped to developed. ENDELS is a language school that is based in North Devon.

Each course lasts between three and five days depending on the needs of the client. Course sessions are interwoven with periods of appreciation of open countryside and the arts, with time allowed for privacy. ReverbNation and Windows - The future of music?

Without doubt ReverbNation is becoming one of the most important sites for independent (music) artists and appear to be the website that is implementing the best strategies for success - below is an unedited email interview with Jed Carlson who is the Chief Operating Officer of ReverbNation. (First published on SystemCulture.org)

Playlist 7 is another joint venture between ReverbNation and Windows. What are the fundamental differences between this program package and the earlier 'Sponsored Song' free download extravaganza?

Playlist 7 is trying to bring the fans more into the equation than in Sponsored Songs. Fans are charged with the ability to determine who moves into the featured slots and who gets the bigger money prizes (over $500 each for featured Artists).

The band equity charts are a great concept (points gained are based on track plays, visits, hits etc.) these scores are used to divide and share advertising revenue between the artists and ReverbNation, which to me seems a radical idea. Is this idea unique and do you think it is sustainable in the long term?

Band Equity is a score that attempts to gauge the 'brand value' of an artist at any given point in time. Band Equity looks at 4 factors of an Artist:

1. Reach: How many people are being touched by the music? All else equal, the Artist that reaches more people should score higher.

2. Influence: Of those people, how many engage with the music, listen to the whole song, come back for more, etc? All else equal, the Artist that engages fans more deeply should score higher.

3. Recency: How recent are the interactions? All else equal, the Artist that has reached and engaged their fans more recently should score higher.

4. Access: What % of your fans is the Artist engaging with? All else equal, the Artist that engages a higher % of fans should score higher.

We devised this metric to more 'holistically' understand Artists the board. It IS ENTIRELY UNIQUE to ReverbNation - we Invented it! We do think that is holds water for many Artists out there, but it isn't perfect by any means. Band Equity Scores have undergone more than a dozen refinements over the course of the introduction of the metric. We will continue to commit to it as a standard for measuring Artists in terms of their brand value going forward and hope that others adopt it.

Playlist 7 is a fantastic way for consumers to download free music via the Internet. With the collapse of the 'traditional' music industry monopoly, the independent artist has been able to take more control regarding recording and distributing their work. Do you think the business model of the 'Sponsored Song', with its embedded advertising is the future of the (download) music industry and do you think paying for tracks via iTunes, Amazon etc. will become a thing of the past?

Music retailing will never become obsolete. People will always trust retailers to deliver music to them. We hope that the concept of embedding adverts inside the download will play a big role in the future of ad-supported music. We even filed a patent on it. But the future of music is likely to be fragmented. As a result, the future of music consumption will be dominated by a large variety of models that provide for it. Embedding adverts into the album art is likely to be just one of them.

ReverbNation have without doubt the best toolbox for the independent artist; the ability to control songs, newsletters, fans, merchandising and distribution from one place is second to none. What do you think the future of ReverbNation will be and what are the ultimate goals?

Our goal is to provide ALL of the solutions that an Artist needs to compete, cooperate, and differentiate in the new music environment. We are on our way to providing that now.

I have noticed that more mainstream and more well know artists have appeared on ReverbNation - this is in many ways a double edged sword. Do you think the influx of established 'stars' will alter the philosophy of the site (which appears to be - to enable and support the independent artist) or are you confident that your strategies are robust enough to cope with the change?

ReverbNation is agnostic to the 'type' of Artist that uses our system. We want to build the best solutions and let anyone who wants them come and use them. We approach every feature with an 'Artist First' mentality. That is to say that we don't build anything that doesn't first help the Artist. Whether its an indie Artist or an established Artists, we don't really care. We are building for a future where every Artist has a fair shake, and our tools serve them equally. If more established Artists want to use our tools, so be it. We are here for every Artist who wants to take control of their future. That's what makes us different. We don't have an angle per se. We just focus on building great technology for everyone.

‘Marriage and Other Games’ has been listed in the final top 20 for a literary award. A starting list of 158 novels, from twenty-four publishers, were submitted for the first round of judging and on the 14th of December 2010 the Romantic Novelists’ Association published the ‘longlist’ of authors who are nominated for the ‘Romantic Novel of the Year Award’ for 2010. 2010 is also the Association’s Golden Anniversary year. Below is a section of their announcement.

“Extraction Part 1’ through to ‘Extraction Part 4’ works out as about thirty five minutes from the ‘Extraction’ album, with everything from scuzzy guitar doldrums, to foul-mouthed American opinion, displaced operatics, Industrial rumblings, orchestral fritters, world musicish musings and waverings, rhythmic sibilance. ‘Hungry Children’ is a weird disquieting flutter, then the gloriously swaggering ‘Where Is My Jesus?’ is real style because this is as good a post-punk slinky noir standout as you’ll find, which then ends up as ‘Jig-Saw Man’, a mutant punk fumble. If you like your music unpredictable but weighty this is for you.”

Veronica Henry is better known as an author and TV script writer, her work is available all over the world and has been translated into several languages. The tracks on the player include,"Fallen Angel" and "Memories" which were recorded on domestic analogue recording equipment in the 1980's and give a unique glimpse into a very creative and perhaps dark mind.

She was expelled from school and was asked to leave University - she spent too much time DJing in a Bristol nightclub, which was described by 'The Face' (a 1980's glossy magazine) as one of the best venues outside London.

What can I say? You could say, "These guys rock" - it would be true but it would probably give the wrong impression and would be a very unimaginative response to their craft....(pause). Below is an email interview with Martin Bowes of Attrition which appears on SystemCulture.org

Some of your early releases were on labels like IRRE Tapes and EE Tapes, these labels were part of the DIY cassette movement. This was an important network for us (one my favourite cassette labels at the time was Insane Music, who were the first to give us a release). Do you think this (postal) network was important to independent artists at the time and that MySpace et al have become the natural siblings or are they totally different?

The whole cassette network was very important... really tied in with the fanzine net work we had at the same time...(i used to run a fanzine called Alternative Sounds myself from 1979-81...until ATTRITION took over my full attention!...) Cassettes were a really good way to get your music out to people without the vast expense of pressing records... you could make up as many as you wanted and they were so cheap to mail out etc.... they really helped a lot of artsists like ourselves.... and became big for a while with some excellent quality releases...and they were taken seriously by the press and record stores.... our first cassette releases sold many hundred copies.......
CDR's took over from cassettes for a while but nowadays the internet has replaced a lot of the networking tools like fanzines and cassettes.... although the internet is an amazing too...i cannot even imagine how we managed to organise anything with out it now!.... at the same time we have been flooded with....well DATA.... there is TOO MUCH information around.... and it can be hard to keep your head above that....
its almost like we need something again to stand out.... perhaps cassettes?... :)

You are one of the most prolific independent artist I know; it must be really hard work to keep producing releases with such high (quality) standards. Is it getting easier?

I never think i am all that prolific...we have put out a LOT of albums...it's slowed a little recently as i've got so involved with reissuing material through our own Two Gods label....
I don't think it is EVER any easier to make and release music.... but that is the magic of it isnt it.... chasing the elusive....

West Buckland Festival is a festival of music, entertainment and leisure, held in a small village on the edge of Exmoor. This year’s festival will feature more than a dozen events between Thursday September 10th and Sunday September 13th 2009.

I really love your tracks - how did you get into making music?

ONE DAY, MY FRIEND, A.J., AND I WERE GOOFIN' OFF IN HIS ROOM WITH A SAMPLE LOOP FROM A 95-SOUTH SONG AND A YAMAHA KEYBOARD. WE RECORDED THE JAM SESSION ON TAPE, WHICH I USED TO AUDITION MY WAY INTO MY FIRST INDIE RECORD LABEL, F.L.A. RECORDS. THAT'S PRETTY MUCH HOW MY LIFE AS A PRODUCER BEGAN...

How would you describe the type of music you create?

DON'T. I JUST LET GOD BE THE PRODUCER WHILE HE LET'S ME BE HIS INSTRUMENT. WHATEVER TYPE OF MUSIC COMES OUT AFTERWARDS...WELL, I LEAVE THAT TO THE GENRE CREATORS TO DECIDE. THERE ARE SO MANY MUSIC GENRES BEING GENERATED OUT THERE NOWADAYS THAT I GET MIGRAINES EVERY TIME I SCROLL THROUGH THE A-Z's OF MUSIC TYPES. I FIGURE, "WHY EVEN BOTHER?"

What are your future plans - releases, live work?

CURRENTLY, I'M WORKING ON NEGOTIATING SHOW DATES FOR A FEW VENUES IN ANCHORAGE, ALASKA. AS WELL, I'M IN POST-PRODUCTION WITH MY DEBUT ALBUM, "THE 3 A.M. SESSIONS," A COLLECTIVE OF SONGS I'VE DONE OVER THE PAST 8 YEARS. Who has been the most inspirational person for you?

TWO PEOPLE, REALLY. AS A PRODUCER...ONE OF MY BEST FRIENDS, AJA LORRAINE. EVERY TIME WE'VE GOTTEN IN THE STUDIO TOGETHER, THE CHEMISTRY HAS BEEN EXPLOSIVE TO THE POINT OF ME GETTING CHILLS AND FEELING LIKE I'VE TAKEN A HIT OF ECSTASY. NOBODY ELSE HAS EVER MADE ME FEEL SO AMPED AS A PRODUCER. NOT ONLY THAT, BUT OUT OF EVERYONE I WAS SURROUNDED BY, SHE WAS THE ONLY PERSON TO REALLY ENCOURAGE ME TO KEEP PUMPING OUT WHAT SHE CONSIDERED "MY CRAZY ASS, DARK, VAMPIRE MUSIC..."
